Interpersonal Psychodynamic Therapy (IPT)

IPT therapy is based on theories of  attachment and personality development. (1) we complete an assessment to determine your attachment style. This is a detailed review of your significant relationships, both current and past. (2) We define your current presenting issue: as grief and loss, interpersonal deficits, or role transitions and roles disputes. (3) We plan for use of mentalisation exercises; to increase your ability to recognize your own mental state as well as those of others' emotions, as separate from their actions and reactions.

IPT recognizes that our personal relationships have a huge impact on mental health. IPT does not attempt to delve into your inner conflicts resulting from your past.

IPT is found to be empirically more effective than CBT for the treatment of major depressive disorder. You should expect your treatment to be weekly, and last for approximately 12 to 16 weeks.

IPT is an intervention for treating:

Anxiety
Social anxiety disorders
Dysthymia
Eating disorders
Perinatal and postpartum depression
Bipolar disorder
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
Substance and alcohol use disorders
